SIMPL-Tolling

Validated over 110 days and more than 1.38 million transactions at a live North American toll facility.

Sunnyvale, California — November 7, 2026 — Seyond, a global leader in high-performance image-grade LiDAR solutions, today announced the launch of SIMPL-Tolling, a 3D LiDAR-based vehicle detection and classification solution for toll gantries. SIMPL-Tolling detects and classifies vehicles across all monitored lanes, supplies predictive trigger timing to the toll camera system and sends accurate transaction data directly to an operator’s Back Office System (BOS).

Toll revenue depends on every vehicle being detected and charged at the right class. A missed or misclassified vehicle is revenue an agency never collects. SIMPL-Tolling is designed to close that gap with precise 3D measurement that works day and night, in rain, glare and other challenging conditions.

Powered by Seyond’s image-grade LiDAR sensors and advanced perception software, SIMPL-Tolling captures precise three-dimensional vehicle data across toll lanes and classifies vehicles using the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) 13-class vehicle classification system and customer-defined classification schemes. The solution also measures attributes including vehicle length, width, height, axle count, speed, and lane position.

Under normal weather, installation and calibration conditions, SIMPL-Tolling is specified for 99.99% or greater vehicle detection accuracy and 99.5% or greater classification accuracy for axle-count-based and length-based schemes. It measures vehicle length, width and height to within ±10 cm, ±8 cm and ±5 cm respectively, and detects vehicles at speeds up to 200 mph.

As vehicles pass through the gantry, SIMPL-Tolling supplies predictive trigger timing to the toll cameras and generates transaction records containing a unique identifier, timestamp, lane information, vehicle classification, and dimensions. These records are then sent to the operator’s BOS for reconciliation, helping identify discrepancies between observed vehicle events and recorded transactions.

“Revenue assurance starts with knowing what is actually happening on the road,” said Austin Wilson, Head of North America, ITS at Seyond. “SIMPL-Tolling gives operators an independent view of vehicle activity and the transaction data associated with it. By comparing that information with their existing systems, operators can identify exceptions, investigate discrepancies, and build greater confidence in their tolling operations.”

Proven in a live tolling environment

SIMPL-Tolling was evaluated by a third party alongside a production all-electronic tolling system at a North American facility for 110 days, covering more than 1.38 million transactions, including 26 days with rain. After approximately three months of on-site model refinement, SIMPL-Tolling’s vehicle classification matched an independent ground-truth sample with 100% accuracy at the end of the evaluation period.

Reconciliation against the facility’s Back Office System also showed the share of vehicles missed by SIMPL-Tolling falling from 0.39% to 0.00% over the deployment. The results demonstrate the potential of independent LiDAR-based vehicle data to support transaction reconciliation and help operators investigate discrepancies in live tolling environments.

“Toll operators can’t afford to lose revenue to missed or misclassified vehicles, and SIMPL-Tolling gives them field-proven accuracy at the gantry without replacing the systems they already run.” said Wilson.

Designed to Complement Existing Tolling Infrastructure

SIMPL-Tolling is designed to work alongside existing tolling infrastructure. By providing an independent data layer, the solution can support reconciliation workflows while preserving existing investments in cameras and back-office platforms.

Key capabilities include:

  • Independent vehicle detection: Captures vehicle events across toll lanes using LiDAR-based 3D perception.
  • Precise vehicle measurement and classification: Generates vehicle-level attributes to support tolling operations and transaction validation.
  • Predictive camera triggering: Supplies predictive front and rear trigger timing to the toll camera system as vehicles approach the gantry.
  • Transaction-level data: Creates uniquely identified records with timestamps, lane information, classification, and vehicle dimensions.
  • Transaction reconciliation: Supports comparison with BOS records to identify missing, extra or misclassified transactions.
  • Operational visibility: Provides data that can help operators investigate exceptions and strengthen revenue assurance processes.
  • Fits existing gantries: Can use existing gantry structures, subject to site assessment.
  • Standard interfaces: Real-time data stream, REST API and CSV export to the Back Office System.
  • BABA compliant: Meets Build America, Buy America requirements.

By adding an independent source of vehicle-level data to the tolling environment, SIMPL-Tolling helps operators move beyond transaction processing alone toward greater visibility into the integrity of their tolling operations.

Advancing Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure

SIMPL-Tolling expands Seyond’s SIMPL intelligent transportation platform into tolling, applying LiDAR-based perception and AI to a critical transportation use case. The solution reflects Seyond’s broader focus on transforming precise 3D environmental data into actionable intelligence for transportation agencies and operators.

SIMPL-Tolling is intended for all-electronic tolling operators, toll road authorities, and system integrators seeking to strengthen transaction verification, improve operational oversight, and identify potential sources of revenue leakage.
